Unfair With God?

Your slightest wish is my command. I have no idea where in my distant past I heard that expression. I think it was uttered by a man trying to impress a woman with his complete devotion to her. We ought to say it to the Lord and carry it out. Because of who He is and what He does He deserves everything that we are and everything that we have. Giving Him anything less is unfair to Him. When we are unfair to God we suffer consequences. It seems almost appropriate to say that when we are unfair to God we are also unfair to ourselves. The rub is that if we are honest we will acknowledge that fairness and justice would condemn us all to the Lake of Fire.

Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Every sin is ultimately against God. Every sin is unfair to Him. He deserves better. Every man, woman and child that ever lived has a natural propensity to be unfair to God. We get very upset when anything unfair happens to us. Unlike us, God is incredibly patient with our unfairness to Him. It is only His mercy that keeps us alive.

Lamentations 3:22: It is of the LORD*S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

There are ways in which our unfairness to God reaps the most terrible consequences. Rejecting Christ is unfair to Him. Withholding oneself from Him is also unfair to Him. When we do those things we throw away something wonderful and valuable that He has paid for. We throw away eternal life. Trusting Him is fair and reasonable. Receiving Him is fair and reasonable. Giving ourselves to Him is fair and reasonable.

Isaiah 1:18: Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Romans 12:1: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 Thessalonians 3:2: And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

Rejecting God*s Word The Bible is unfair. People have many methods of rejecting it. Some claim there are mistakes in the Bible. They use that false premise to reject the Bible and thereby reject God Himself. The problem will not be with their knowledge or their intellect. It is a problem with their will. The problem is usually that they are not willing to believe it. They are unfairly and unwisely prejudiced against it. Many genuine skeptics who study the Bible to try to prove it has mistakes have become converted to Christ by studying it. People I shall call unfair skeptics merely parrot claims about errors they have heard from others. They do not investigate the Bible for themselves. Claiming the Bible has mistakes without personally studying it is unfair and unwise.

Proverbs 18:13: He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

Rejecting the Bible is much like a judge or jury declaring someone guilty or innocent without hearing the evidence.

Some people wrestle with the Bible. They don*t wrestle with it fairly or wisely. They either add their own thoughts to it or take some of God*s thoughts away from it. In a sense they write their own Bible.

2 Peter 3:16: As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

Revelation 22:18-19: For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

When people unfairly reject the Word of God, they unwittingly reject the only thing that can bring them to faith in Christ and eternity in heaven.

Romans 10:17: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Perhaps the epitome of being unfair to God is when people actually accuse Him of being unfair. The prophet Ezekiel told the people of Israel about their sins. They did not want to hear it and actually accused God of being unfair.

Ezekiel 18:29-31: Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal? Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

There are many ways that we try to reject the communications of other people. We might simply avoid someone. We might hang up the phone when someone calls. We might not answer the phone. We might put someone off until later. We might plug our ears. We might talk so loud that we can*t hear others. We might discard mail from others. We might even be rude enough to shout Shut up! at someone. All of those things get the same result. We don*t hear what the other person has to say.

Our methods of rejecting God and His Word are not all that different from the methods we have of rejecting other people and their communications. We might simply avoid Him. We might put Him off until later. We might plug our ears. We might talk so loud that we can*t hear Him. We might discard His word. All of those things get the same result we would get if we were rude enough to shout Shut up! at Him. The result is that we don*t hear what God has to say.

We all have our own ways of shushing God. None of them are fair. We need to recognize how we have been shushing Him and stop it. We need to open our ears and our hearts to Him. That would be fair because He deserves it. He is worthy!
